As for this, the role is quite different in the grand piano and the upright piano though it is a pedal at the center in the end.
There are not so many things used by the one of being called, “Sostenuto pedal” in the grand piano, and bringing only the specific sound the effect similar to “Sustaining pedal”.
On the other hand, it is called, “Mute pedal” in the upright piano, and can reduce the sound very much.
It is born a similar effect to the silent pictures pianos of the fashion steps on this pedal now.
